IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Phyllis
Warfel
November 24, 1930 – April 27, 2018
Phyllis Carroll (Johnson) Warfel, 87, passed away on April 27 at St.
Francis Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was born in Chicago,
IL, the daughter of the late Owen M. and Marjorie C. Johnson. She grew
up in Belvidere, IL. Phyllis attended the (then) Women's Division of
the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, NC before transferring
to and graduating from the University of Wisconsin at Madison where she
majored in speech and theater. She studied stage directing and acting
at the Yale School of Drama, graduating in 1955. At Yale she met her
husband of 61 years, William Warfel. They married the day after
receiving their degrees, and then Phyllis worked at the Yale Library and
at radio station WADS in Ansonia. The couple lived in Hanover, NH and
Leonia, NJ before returning to New Haven where Phyllis worked at the
Theater Department of Southern Connecticut State University. During her
time there she directed several acclaimed productions. She was editor of
the Yale School of Drama Alumni Newsletter for ten years, and her
service continues to be recognized by the school's Phyllis Warfel Award
given annually to the alumnus who has devoted significant service to the
school's alumni body. Phyllis was prdeceased by her husband. She is survived by her
brothers Owen Johnson of Potomac, MD and Dr. David Johnson of Tucson,
AZ, daughters Arden Lowe of South Hadley, MA and Katherine Trudeau of
East Hartford, grandsons Joshua (Jill) and Ryan Lowe of South Hadley, MA
and Jeffrey Lowe of Ithaca, NY, as well as granddaughter Melissa Trudeau
of East Hartford and three great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Church New Haven, Saturday,
May 12th at 11:00. There are no calling hours. Phyllis's family would
like to extend their deepest gratitude for the outstanding staff at The
Atrium, who, through their compassion and skilled expertise, made her
final months comfortable and free of pain. In lieu of flowers, the
