Obituary

Nathan M. Silverstein died peacefully on March 14. He was 100 years old. Nathan was born on February 1,1924 in Hartford Ct. He grew up with his parents  Dora (Kosofsky) and Samuel Silverstein and his three siblings Irving, Evelyn (Fain) and Melvin (Mike).

While attending Weaver H.S. in Hartford he was active in athletics and began his days early in the morning delivering milk along with his brothers Irv and Mike for the family business, Peoples Dairy. Nate enlisted and served in the Navy during WWII. He was always appreciative of the opportunities afforded him from the GI Bill. After his Honorable Discharge he graduated from Boston University Law School and NYU Law school with a Masters in tax law. He developed a successful law practice that lasted well into his nineties. His reputation as trusted counsel was evident by how many clients became lifelong friends.

Sometime in the 1980's Nathan began his life with Cynthia Harris. They shared a love of many things, enriching  their lives with travel, art, culture and close friendships. Nathan split his time between New Haven and New York. You were as likely to see him at Woolsey Hall or Yale Rep as you would Lincoln Center. He was an ardent supporter of many arts organizations through the years, particularly the New Haven Symphony.

Throughout his life, Nathan was physically active. In childhood and high school it was sandlot baseball and basketball. He jogged before it was a popular trend. About 1964 he thought it would be good to learn how to ski and eventually brought along the family. This led to wonderful, life changing years spending every winter weekend in Ludlow, Vt. and many trips seeking western powder. He also became an avid fly fisherman. He had fishing adventures near and far, again developing lifelong friendships along the way. He will be missed at an annual fishing weekend spent with his son and close friends this April. His most consistent individual commitment in athletics was to paddle and racquet sports. Nathan spent many hours on courts with friendly opponents throughout New Haven County and Manhattan. He was still volleying tennis balls at 96.

Nathan was predeceased by his sister Evelyn and brothers Irv and Mike. Cynthia Harris also predeceased Nathan. He is survived by his children; Robert Silverstein and his wife Eunice Froeliger of Charlotte VT., Richard P. Silverstein and his wife Jamie Alosi of New Haven CT. and Nancy Ashcroft of Guilford CT. He also leaves his grandchildren; Molly Bierman and husband Sam of Sparks, MD, Michael Silverstein and Greta Van Campen of Thomaston, ME, Tess Ashcroft of Delray, FL, Nathan Ashcroft and his wife Michayla of Silver Spring, MD, Will Ashcroft of Brooklyn, NY. He was also fortunate to spend time with his great grandchildren; Noa Mae Silverstein, Nellie Ault Silverstein and Bodi Bierman. The family wishes to thank his friends in New York and Connecticut for the love and care they shared with Nathan, especially in recent years.

There are no plans for a public service at this time. Nathan was a strong supporter of the Yale Sappern Memorial Fund. You can honor his life by making a donation to the Yale Sappern Memorial Fund, c/o Parrett Porto, 2319 Whitney Ave., Hamden, CT. 06518
