Obituary

Mary Bush (Bushie) Clement Estabrook, 93, born in New Haven, CT, daughter of the late Stuart Holmes and Margaret Bush Clement, died at home in her sleep on April 15.  Given her wry sense of humor, it's likely she opted for Tax Day to let go of life giving a nod to the two inevitabilities of life we all share.

Bushie was a graduate of Westover School, Vassar College and SCSC where she earned her masters and 6th year degrees in Psychology. She had a 58-year marriage to Henry W. Estabrook.  After raising three children she had a meaningful career as a psychologist in the New Haven Public School system. Upon retirement Mary volunteered for many years at New Haven Reads and Connecticut Hospice. She served on the boards of the Colonial Dames of Connecticut, the Woman's Seamen's Friend Society of CT, Westover School, and on a variety of committees at Evergreen Woods.  She was a member of The New Haven Lawn Club, The North End Club, and the Garden Club of New Haven.

Bushie was a fine athlete throughout her lifetime, playing racquet sports, skiing, skating, saltwater swimming, golfing, and participating in fitness classes at Evergreen Woods. Music filled her life. She sang in school and college choral groups, in the New Haven Chorale, in a local women's and a family quartet, and was a long-time subscriber of the New Haven symphony. Outdoor walks near their Vermont home with the family dog, bird watching, and traveling with dear friends all rounded out a rich and happy life.

Bushie is survived by her three daughters Margaret Stienstra (Pieter) of Zurich, Switzerland, Amy Estabrook of Mystic, CT, Elizabeth Hatfield of South Pomfret, VT, her grandchildren Nicholas (Brooklyn) & Pieter (Melanie) Stienstra, Benjamin (Allison) Ross & Chelsea (Chris) Gagnier, two great granddaughters Bronwyn Ross and Caroline Gagnier, grand dogs and cats, beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, two brothers Stuart H. Clement, Jr. and Samuel P.B. Clement, son-in-law Robert Hatfield, and great-grandson Noah Stienstra. A celebration of Bushie's life is planned for Monday, May 6 at 2:30 at Evergreen Woods, North Branford CT.  She will be buried alongside Hemmie in a private ceremony in Boston at a later date.

In lieu of flowers contributions in her name may be made to:  New Haven Reads,

Elevate Scholarship Program at Evergreen Woods, or Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
