Martha Miller Newton entered into rest peacefully on January 25th with her family by her side at her home in Evergreen Woods, North Branford.
She was born on March 10, 1922 in Latrobe PA. She graduated from Allegheny College and the Yale University School of Nursing with a Master of Nursing Degree and was active in nursing all her life, never thinking about retiring even at the age of 88! She was a devoted member of the Spring Glen Church for 60 years singing in the choir for many of those years. She loved gardening and was involved in the Church's Gardening Club while also creating her own beautiful gardens at her North Haven home where she resided for more than 50 years.
She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Robert F. Newton, predeceased by her son Thomas B. Newton (Jennifer), her parents Dr. and Mrs. Charles S. Miller, and two brothers, Charles (Helen) and Robert Miller (Betty Ray).Mother of David I. Newton, New Haven, CT, Steven R. Newton (Teresa), Fort Worth TX, and Kathryn B. Newton,North BranfordCT., sister of William B. Miller (Jean), Vermont, Stephen B. Miller (Joan),Florida, and Edwin Miller (June), St. Thomas USVI. Grandmother of David, Matthew (Liana), Rebecca (Chris) Diamantopoulos, Justin, Emily,William, Lauren, Edward and Great Grandmother to Rex and Daphne. She also loved Ilene, Keaton, Siena and Olivia who were part of her extended family.
She brought great joy and devotion to her family and friendships, uncommon skill and commitment to her work as a nurse, was quick to laugh and, most of all, she was guided throughout her long life by her faith in God.
A memorial service for Martha will be held at the Spring Glen Congregational Church at 11 AM on February 27th. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in her honor be made to the Thomas B. Newton Memorial Fund at the Hopkins School, 986 Forest Rd. New Haven, CT 06515, or the Spring Glen Church, 1825 Whitney Ave., Hamden, CT 06517.
