IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Margaret
Devore
January 21, 1920 – August 6, 2016
Margaret Tolles DeVore, born to Margaret Jordan Tolles and Arthur Robert Tolles on January 21, 1920, died peacefully in Longmeadow, MA on August 6, 2016.
She grew up in Jamaica Queens, NY and attended John Adams High School where she was a member of the girls' swim team and basketball team. She also attended Browns Business College. Always very active in Girl Scouts of America as a scout, she later became a troop leader.
She had a successful professional career at Union Carbide in NYC where she was an Executive Assistant for 25 years.
She married John Brennen in 1943 and after being widowed she married Harry DeVore in 1969. Widowed a second time, she moved to Madison to be near family in 1975 and resided there for almost 40 years. She quickly became very active in the community working in the Assessor's office and volunteering for many organizations and activities such as the public library, the First Congregational Church where she was a member, the Rotary newsletter and the Middlesex Hospital Emergency Room in Essex.
She was an avid reader, and enjoyed world-wide traveling and providing transportation for her many friends. Most importantly Margaret will be remembered as a gentle, loving and generous lady. Even in declining health, she remained a very warm and caring person who easily shared her love and appreciation with family, friends, and caregivers.
She is survived by her sister Marion Tolles Greim of Madison. She was the loving aunt of Joanne Greim Fox of Madison, Jeffrey Greim and his wife Lorie Dixon of Longmeadow, MA and Margaret Hannigan and her husband Thomas of Longmeadow, MA. She was very proud of, and always there for, her great-nieces and great-nephews, Kaitlin and Thomas Hannigan and Jennifer and Michael Greim.
A private interment was celebrated on August 10, 2016. A memorial service will be scheduled in the Fall at the Mary Kilton Memorial Chapel of the First Congregational Church of Madison. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be made to either the Scranton Memorial Library or the First Congregational Church of Madison. Arrangements are with Hawley Lincoln Memorial, 1315 Boston Post Road, Guilford, CT. To sign the online guestbook please visit hawleylincolnmemorial.com.
