Obituary

Lucy Larcom Dayton Deephouse died February 4, 2015 In Madison, Connecticut. She was born on December 28, 1932, in Newton, Massachusetts, the daughter of Ward Winchell Dayton and Elizabeth Larcom Dayton. After moving from Newton to LaCrosse, Wisconsin, Lucy then grew up in Winnetka, Illinois where she attended New Trier High School and North Shore Country Day School. She majored in English at Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1953. Lucy married James Russell Deephouse on July 1, 1952. Their children are Christopher, Deborah and David. The Deephouse family lived for many years in West Hartford, Connecticut.

Lucy received her M.S. in Mathematics from Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut, in 1969 and then was employed by Trinity College for 32 years. She worked in the Math Department deciphering professors' notes and as a lecturer in mathematics and computer science. When Trinity established math proficiency as a degree requirement, Lucy, as Associate Director of the Math Center, developed both criteria to define proficiency and courses to assist students in meeting the requirement. She made many presentations about Trinity's math program at national mathematics conferences. Lucy's favorite course was teaching adult individualized degree candidates who had avoided math in high school. Lucy retired from Trinity in 1999.

Lucy and Jim bought a summer cottage in Madison in 1963, and they became active members at the Madison Beach Club where she was active as a soloist in the annual "Follies". They replaced the cottage with a nice year-round home 25 years ago, and they joined the Madison Winter Club. She also was a member of The Shoreline Chorale and the Choral Club of Clinton.

Lucy is survived by her husband, James Russell Deephouse, her children and their spouses: Chris Deephouse and Donna Hunt of Wilmington, Delaware, Deborah and David Blecich of Cuttingsville, Vermont, and David Deephouse and Melissa Hathaway of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and her granddaughters Nancy Deephouse of Philadelphia, Kimberly Blecich of Albany, New York, Alicia Blecich of Cuttingsville, Vermont, and Abigail Deephouse Bowering of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
