LCdr. John (Jack) Bartlett Wells, USN Ret., of Guilford, CT peacefully passed away on the evening of May 25, 2016. Jack's beloved wife of 66 years, Barbara Sanderson Wells, had predeceased him only 7 months earlier. He is survived by their four children: Wendy Wells(Stephen Waldo) of Randolph Center, Vermont, Christopher Wells of Guilford, Timothy Wells(Priscilla) of Mystic, and Sarah Honsberger(Jeffrey) of Westbrook. Also eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, his twin sister Alice Erickson, and many nieces and nephews.
Born on May 3, 1924, Jack grew up on Kingsbury Street in Wellesley, MA. He entered the Navy during WWII taking his flight training at Kimble Union Academy and flying out of the Lebanon,NH Airport.
Jack and Barbara were married on May 7, 1949. As his family expanded there were many moves up and down the eastern coast of the United States and even three years in Japan.
During the Cold War Jack was a member of several anti-submarine(ASW) flight squadrons including VP16 out of Jacksonville NAS, Florida and VP7 out of Quonset Point NAS, RI. He was also involved in with the nuclear testing in Nevada in the early 1950's.
In the early 1960's The Commander was attached to the US Embassy in Tokyo, Japan where he served as liaison between the Embassy and the Japanese Navy(MAAG-military assistance advisory group).
During His time in the Navy, Jack enjoyed flying in the big prop engine airplanes( P2V's and Constellations/hurricane hunters) and helicopters.
After retiring from active duty in 1965, Jack worked at Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford, CT. In 1966 he and Barbara purchased the house on Fair Street where they would live for the next fifty years. After retiring from Sikorsky, Jack worked as a Realtor helping many folks in the Guilford area buy and sell their homes.
Jack loved spending time with his family and spent many fun vacations in Cape Cod. He shared his love of life and practical jokes with everyone he met. He was generous and helpful to any person or animal that crossed his path.
Aside from his family and flying, Jack loved to sail. He was a founding member of the Guilford Yacht Club and an active member of the Frost Biters out of the Sachem's Head Yacht Club. Brother John B. Wells was a master mason and member for over fifty years of the Meridian Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Natick, MA.
The entire Wells family gives a special thanks to the staff at Academy Point of Mystic for the care and love they gave to our father during the last few months of his life.
Jack and Barbara were members of the First Congregational Church of Guilford where there will be a memorial service for Jack on June 11th at 1PM.
