Obituary

John Howard Krick, a resident of Masonicare Healthcare Center in Wallingford, passed away on June 26, 2016, at Midstate Medical Center in Meriden after a sudden illness. John was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 24th, 1928, son of Howard Vincent Krick and Willa Penn Dorning. He was married to Frances Ann (DeeDee) Somerville from 1953 until her death in 2009. John graduated from The Taft School in 1946, Dartmouth College in 1950, and Columbia Law School in 1953.

He began his legal career at the law firm of Lander and Krick, which later became later Lander, Greenfield, Markle, and Krick, and then, Greenfield, Krick, and Jacobs. He was Of Counsel at Parrett, Porto, and Parese, and subsequently, the Law Firm of Arthur Sachs. John was an expert in the field of bankruptcy law and served as President of the Commercial Law League of America, a national professional organization.

John was a valued longstanding member of the Church of the Redeemer, where he served as a member and leader of many stewardship committees. He was on the Board of Directors of The Elizabeth Ives School and The Mary Wade Home, and was President of the Commercial Law League of America. Additionally, he was President of The Quinnipiack Club and served on governing boards of The New Haven Country Club and The High Lane Club.

John also took an active role in Hamden politics, serving as Chairman of the Board of Education in Hamden from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. This was a period of significant growth and during his tenure Shepherd Glen School and Ridge Hill School were constructed, and Spring Glen School, Wintergreen School, and Hamden High School underwent significant renovations.

John was an avid golfer and skilled duckpin bowler. He and his beloved DeeDee enjoyed traveling, and spent summer weeks in Nantucket and winter weeks in the Cayman Islands and Barbados. Other travel destinations included Fiji, New Zealand, Portugal, and Greece.

After DeeDee's death, John relocated to Ashlar Village, and later, to Masonicare. He continued to be involved in a variety of activities and organizations, including representing his floor on the Good Neighbor Board, where he acted as a liaison between fellow residents and the administration. Being confined to a wheelchair in no way limited John's zest for life. He was a passionate student of history, aficionado of a wide variety of music, and had recently taken up oil painting.

John leaves his three children: John (Lisa Whitcomb) of Bala Cynwyd, Pa.; Laura Hurwitz (Samuel) of New Haven; Suzanne Greenawalt (John) of Hamden, and ten grandchildren: Evan and Madeleine Krick, Hannah, Jacob, Rachael, Sarah, Eliza, and Micah Hurwitz, and John and Drew Greenawalt, as well as a great-grand-daughter, Aubrey Krick. He also leaves many cherished nieces, nephews, in-laws, and cousins, as well as his dear companion of the past two years, Dawn Thomas. Truly, his family was, in every sense, John's greatest pride and joy.

The burial will be private. A service to celebrate John's life will be held at The Church of the Redeemer, 185 Cold Spring Street, New Haven, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 9th.
