Obituary

Joan Payne Platner of Guilford, CT died at home on March 29, 2017. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio on October 23, 1918 to Ruth Adams Payne and Kenneth Wilcox Payne. Predeceased by her husband, Joseph Warren Platner, she is survived by her four children: Bronson Platner of Ellsworth, ME, Jody Platner of New Haven, CT, Sharon Platner Lincoln of Chester, CT and Madeleine Platner Howenstine of Killingworth, CT. She is also survived by her sister Barbara Payne Cray of Denver, CO. She leaves eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.



Joan was a graduate of George School and Sarah Lawrence College. An early childhood educator, she taught at and directed the North Guilford Nursery School for over 30 years. She was an avid reader; a world traveler; a Guilford Library Volunteer; a Quaker; a lover of Great Pyrenees Mountain Dogs; an accomplished sailor (winning a national championship in the Nimblet class in 1936); a writer, and had a strong interest in social and political causes.
