HENRY W. JONES, lll, 95, of Wallingford, CT, passed away peacefully at Masonicare Health Center in Wallingford on August 24, 2016, surrounded by his family. He was born in Worcester, MA on November 6, 1920, son of the late Henry W. Jones, Jr. and Elisabeth Prentiss Jones.
Mr. Jones attended the Foote School in New Haven prior to graduating from Hamden High School in its inaugural class of 1938. He received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Cornell University in 1942 and studied aeronautical engineering at the Massachusetts lnstitute of Technology before being commissioned as an ensign in the U.S, Navy in the fall of 1942. While at M.l.T., Mr. Jones co-authored a textbook on aeronautical engineering,
Mr. Jones served in WWll as an Aircraft Mechanic aboard the USS Boxer and then as Chief Aircraft Mechanic aboard the USS Midway as a proud member of its original crew.
Mr. Jones was Vice-President and Chief of Engineering at the American Tube Bending Co. from 1946-1961, when he joined Phelps Dodge Electronic Products Corp. as Vice-President, General Manager and Director. He was President of Bristol Saybrook Co. prior to joining Franz Mfg. Co. as Vice-President of Engineering.
Mr. Jones was an avid pipe organist and organ historian, serving as organist of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hamden. He tuned and repaired organs in and around lthaca, NY while a student at Cornell, having been trained by the late Harry Hall, a world-renowned organ builder. He was a ham radio operator in high school, building shortwave radios from scratch. His interest in aviation continued after WWll, after which he obtained his private pilot's license.
Mr. Jones served three terms on North Haven's Board of Finance and was a Past Director of the Manufacturers Assn. of CT. He was a Warden and Vestry Member at Grace and St. Peter's Episcopal Church and belonged to the Newcomen Society, the Quinnipiack Club and the New Haven Country Club.
Mr. Jones was predeceased by wives Ruth Goodyer Jones (2009), Ruth E. Franz (2016) and his brother Edward T. Jones (2O12). He is survived by his sister Barbara J. Hale of Hamden, daughters Elsbeth J. Kozel of Pittsford, NY, Amy Jones-Ozenbaugh (David) of Philadelphia, PA, Sarah J. Gabriel of Hampton, VA, son Henry W. Jones, lV (Julie) of Victor, NY, six grandchildren, one great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.
Interment was private. The memorial scheduled for Nov. 5 has been postponed until the spring of 2017.
