Greydon Carl Freeman, 74, died peacefully at his home in Woodbridge on February 6, 2015. Born in Hanover, New Hampshire on February 22, 1940 to the late Greydon and Ethel Freeman, Grey was a member of the Hanover High School Class of 1958 and the Yale Class of 1962. After earning an honors degree in engineering, he was awarded a Carnegie Teaching Fellowship in 1965. He joined the Yale Computer Center as a senior programmer and served as its director from 1970 to 1985. During his tenure, Grey co-founded the electronic communications network BITNET, which by the early 1990's linked hundreds of universities and research institutions and which remains widely regarded as a vital precursor to the modern Internet. From 1985 to 2006 he was employed at Gartner, Inc. in Stamford, serving as Vice President and Research Director. At the time of his death, he was Vice President of Research and Development and Specialty Products at TicketNetwork.com in Manchester. Grey was an active member of the Woodbridge and Yale communities over the past five decades. He served on the Board of Directors of the Yale Club of New Haven, as Chair of the Woodbridge Library Commission, and as an Associate Fellow of Pierson College. He was a member of the Association for Computing Machinery, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the IEEE Computer Society, the New Haven Country Club, the Kiawah Island Club, and the Yale Club of New York City. A devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Grey is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marcie; his children, Jonathan Freeman (Rebecca Makkai) of Lake Forest, IL, Courtney Phillips (John) of San Anselmo, CA, and Hunter Freeman of Raleigh, NC; and granddaughters Sarah, Lucy, Alice, Lydia, and Heidi.
