Grace Valentine Pouch Sloan, nee Grace V. Pentz, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at the age of 104 in Essex, CT, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Grace, the daughter of Robert and Grace Hollick Pentz, was born on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1911 and lived on Staten Island for much of her adult life. She graduated from Staten Island Academy and Maryland College for Women and then worked in New York City for the American Sugar Refining Company before marrying Kenneth A. Pouch, also of Staten Island. They raised a family of four children on Staten Island: Sally, Robert, Kenneth Jr. and Dorothy. Following the death of her first husband, Grace married Roland Hoyt Sloan Jr., also of Staten Island. They resided in Staten Island until his retirement, then moving to Madison, CT and subsequently to Essex Meadows retirement community in Essex, CT. Grace and Roland were blessed with a long and active retirement with both new and life-long friends, traveling extensively and enjoying all the New England seasons of the year at the beloved family house in Madison as well as at the Madison Winter Club and Madison Beach Club. Grace will be greatly missed by her family: Sally and Joe Barber of Pennington, NJ; Robert and Susan Pouch of Irvington, NY; Kenneth and Mary Pouch of West Hartford, Ct; Dorothy and Peter Petrochko of Oxford, CT; and her nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, all of whom knew and loved their dear "Goggi". Grace is also survived by her three sisters: Dorothy O'Neill and Audrey Pentz of Greensboro, NC and Carol Logan of Minneapolis, MN and was pre-deceased by her brother, Arthur Pentz, also of Greensboro, NC. The family would like to recognize and thank the staff at Essex Meadows, who so professionally and lovingly cared for Grace. She was truly blessed to be in their care.
