Frederick Grave

August 8, 1926 — April 11, 2026


Frederick David Grave III, husband of Kathryn Grave, passed away peacefully at his home in Hamden, CT on April 11th. He was born August 8, 1926, the son of Frederick David Grave Jr and Elizabeth Moran Grave.

Fred served in the Marine Corps Infantry from 1944-1946. He was a graduate of Yale University, class of 1950. He was Chairman of the Board of F.D. Grave & Son, Inc where he worked his entire life. He was very civic minded, serving on numerous boards including The Children’s Center, New Haven Chapter American Red Cross, New Haven Heart Association, New Haven Chamber of Commerce, New Haven Health Care, Inc and The New Haven Lawn Club. He served as President to the Farnam Neighborhood House, North Haven Exchange Club, Connecticut Hospice and The New Haven Country Club. He was also a member of the United States Seniors Golf Association and the Mory’s Association.

Fred was a life long runner/walker, an avid golfer (who had his 7th hole in one at 89yo) and enjoyed tennis. He and Kay enjoyed many years spending time golfing in South Palm Beach, Florida, golfing in Scotland and with the US Seniors and traveling. He loved spending time with his family who enjoyed his great sense of humor. Years of family lunches every Friday were a highlight of the week for all of us. He was a big presence in all our lives and will be missed.

He is survived by his three children, Ted Grave of Hamden, Frederick D. Grave IV (Sally) of Cheshire and Dorothy Hoyt (William) of North Haven. He is survived by his seven grandchildren, Peter (Allie), Laura, Frederick V (Vidya), Charlie, Amelia, Hillary and Olivia. He is also survived by his five great grandchildren, Hadley, Alexa, Aiden, Etienne and Madhavi. Fred was very fond of his step sons Mark, Tom and Scott Erickson.

He was predeceased by his daughter Nancy Grave Noonan of North Haven, grandson Steven Grave of Cheshire, daughter in law Sally Grant Grave of Cheshire and his four siblings.

Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
