IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elizabeth
Yen
February 22, 1957 – July 12, 2023
Elizabeth C. Yen, J.D., a partner at Hudson Cook LLP and past Chair of the Truth in Lending Subcommittee, of the American Bar Association Consumer Financial Services Committee, part of the American Bar Association's Business Law Section, died at her home on July 12, 2023, in Hamden, Connecticut after a viral illness. She was 66.
Attorney Yen graduated from Yale University cum laude in 1976 majoring in French & German Literature. Before entering law school, she fought racial employment discrimination with Attorney Mary Ellen Wynn for the plaintiffs in Williams v. Wallace Silversmiths, Inc. She graduated from the University of Michigan Law School cum laude in 1980. She then returned to New Haven to practice law.
Attorney Yen was elected 1997-2001 Chair of the Truth in Lending Subcommittee while she was a partner at Pullman & Comley in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She was elected 1999-2000 Treasurer of the Connecticut Bar Association. Then, in 2000, she joined Hudson Cook, LLP, an internet-linked national law firm headquartered in Maryland where she practiced through the present day. Later, she was elected as a Fellow and Regent of the American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers.
Elizabeth Chih-Sheng Yen was the daughter of Chinese immigrants Ti Yen and Esther (Tan) Yen. Ti Yen had served as an interpreter for US troops in China during World War II. He and Esther met shortly after the War as students at the University of Illinois. Ti Yen eventually joined Michigan State University's Mathematics Department. Esther studied Library Science at the University of Michigan and later worked as a librarian for the State.
Born in Chicago, Elizabeth grew up primarily in East Lansing, Michigan. Like her father, she loved music. She played piano and violin and sang in Yale's early music ensemble Collegium Musicum first as a student and later as a returning alumna. She supported music as a long-time member and later chair of Yale's Friends of Music.
Ice skating was her favorite hobby. Elizabeth started with no formal instruction as a child growing up in Michigan. Before global warming, it was easy to make an ice rink by flooding a lawn or playground with water during the winter. She and her husband finally took formal lessons in their 40s and mastered basic ice dances. She looked forward to their annual trips to Lake Placid for lessons with master teachers.
Elizabeth Yen is survived by her husband of 37 years, Seth Powsner, her brother Felix Yen, her sister Irene Yen (Andrew Stern), and her nephews Railey and Kai Stern Yen. A memorial service is planned for later this year. In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting the ABA Fund for Justice and Education or the Friends of Music at Yale.
