Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" Womer (nee Benson), 87, of North Branford, CT passed away while surrounded by her family at The Connecticut Hospice on Thursday, June 16th due to complications of a recent fall.

Mrs. Womer was born on December 23, 1928 in Troy, NY. The youngest of three children, she was the only daughter of Arthur Wight Benson, MD, and Catherine Clark Benson.

After graduating from the Emma Willard School, Mrs. Womer attended Flora Stone Mather College (now Case Western Reserve University) in Cleveland, graduating with B.A. in English in 1950. While a student there, she met Charles B. Womer, a Cleveland native, WWII Army veteran, and engineering student. They married in October 1950.

Over the next thirty-five years, Mrs. Womer and her husband lived in the Cleveland area and in Woodbridge, CT and brought up three children while Mr. Womer worked as a hospital administrator, including serving as President of Yale New Haven Hospital and University Hospitals of Cleveland. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Mrs. Womer served as president of both Yale Newcomers and the Yale University Women's Organization (YUWO). A life-long lover of choral and classical music, Mrs. Womer sang with choirs in both the Cleveland and New Haven areas. She was also an active member of The First Church of Christ, Woodbridge for the last thirty years. In 1999, she moved with her husband to Evergreen Woods in North Branford, CT. Her greatest joy throughout her life was enjoying family and friends, all of whom were blessed by her generous spirit and ever-present smile.

Mrs. Womer is survived by her three children: Richard Womer, MD (Joy Wiltenburg) of Philadelphia, Carol Sim of Chattanooga, and John Womer (Mary Beth) of Woodbridge, as well as six grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband on February 24, 2009.

A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held at the First Church of Christ, Woodbridge on Saturday, July 23rd at 2:00PM, followed by a reception at the church Parish House.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations being made to either the First Church of Christ, Woodbridge, 5 Meetinghouse Lane, Woodbridge, CT 06525 or the Evergreen Woods Employee Scholarship Fund , 88 Notch Hill Road, North Branford, CT 06471.
