Albert Duffield, 92, an engineer and man who served others went to his Lord on Friday, Oct. 14th. He was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a son of an owner of E.T. Duffield's Dry Goods and Groceries Store.

He worked as an engineer for Winchester, a division of Olin Corporation, for more than 25 years, first in East Alton, Illinois and then New Haven. He was the primary name on seven patents and named on several others that are owned by the corporation. He also worked at SK Tool, a division of Dresser Industries starting in Chicago, Illinois for a year, before he opened a plant for the company in Johnson City, Tennessee. He managed that plant for most of a decade.

At an age when many people retire, he started his own environmental consulting business. In this capacity among other things, he served as a professional witness. He finally retired on his 80thbirthday.

He enjoyed getting things done and accomplished much. He built a house for his family in Woodbridge from a pre-fab kit. He was pivotal on the building committee of two church buildings – Calvary Baptist in Orange and in New Haven. He was on the board of directors for the Connecticut Baptist Homes when the nursing home facility was built. The nursing home is where he lived for the last 15 months of his life. He was an active deacon at First Baptist Church in Branford, where he accompanied his son a few weeks before his passing.

He received honors beyond his patents. He was involved in the dredging of the Guildford Lakes and a dam registered by the state of Connecticut was named after him. He received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor awarded to a volunteer by the Boy Scouts of America council. He earned a degree in engineering from Michigan Technology University, which he attended both before and after serving in World War II. During the war he fixed the army's trucks and was still very proud at the end of his life neared that he kept those trucks moving.

He was pre-deceased by his wife of 68 years, Lois Duffield and is survived by his sonsJohnand James Duffield, his daughter Grace Duffield and his sister Blanche Marshall. He also leaves two grandchildren.

Hours of visitation will be held at Hawley Lincoln Memorial,5-8 pmFriday, Oct. 21stat 1315 Boston Post Road, Guilford. The funeral will be 11:00 Saturday, Oct. 22nd at the First Baptist Church of Branford, 975 Main Street. In lieu of flowers contributions to the First Baptist Church of Branford would be appreciated.
