Shirley Sutton Morrison

April 30, 1926 ~ February 25, 2015 (age 88)

Shirley Sutton Morrison, 88, of Clinton, CT, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on February 25, 2015.  Shirley is predeceased by her husband, John Richard Morrison Jr., her brothers Strain (Tim) Sutton, William Warburton Sutton III, and her sisters Audrey Lee Sutton Hickson, and Katherine(Kay) Warburton Sutton.  She leaves behind three children:  Nancy Kay Morrison Farwell and her husband Mark Olander, of Fair Oaks, CA;  Gale Sutton Morrison Plancon and her husband Pol (Flip), of Branford, CT;  John Richard Morrison III, and his wife Arlene, of Old Lyme, CT; and her step-daughter Sandra Morrison Geller,  and her husband Bill, of Hudson, FL.  She also leaves two grandchildren: Julia Morrison and Hannah Morrison, and four step-grandchildren: Barbara Miller Bitzer, Brenda Miller Farrell, Bonnie Miller Shaul, and Billie Miller.  In addition, Shirley leaves several loving nieces and nephews and their families.

Born April 30, 1926, in Hempstead, Long Island, NY, Shirley graduated from Freeport High School in 1941, and immediately went to work as a cashier on Wall Street at Merrill Lynch for 7 years.  In 1948, she married the "Love of her Life", John, who was a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Air Corps, recently returning as a pilot in World War II.  Together they lived all over the country, as John's career moved them "22 times in 10 years", before landing in Baldwin NY for 12 years, and then finally settling in Clinton, CT, where they enjoyed their view of the Indian River.

Shirley always desired to go to college, and at age 65, she attended Middlesex Community College, earning her Associates in Science degree.  A self-proclaimed "news-junkie", Shirley read 3 newspapers a day, closely following the Stock Market and political articles.  In 1974, Shirley was hired as an assistant bookkeeper at the Clinton Town Hall.  She diligently worked her way up to becoming the Executive Assistant to the First Selectman, and worked with 8 different First Selectmen over her 32 years of service there.  She retired in 2008, at age 82.  Having lived on the water nearly all her life, she had a passion for boating in and around Clinton Harbor.  Her favorite pastime was going out for a steak dinner with family and friends, but she was also an avid bridge player.
