Andrea Hogan, 45, wife of Joel Perez and mother to Elena and Rocio Hogan-Perez, died peacefully on July 12 in her home in New Haven, CT.
Andrea’s family will welcome all who wish to pay their respects at the Hawley Lincoln Funeral Home, 424 Elm St., New Haven on Tuesday, July 16 at 5:00pm, followed by a brief service at 7:00pm.
Andrea was born on September 10, 1973 in New Haven to William and Jo-Ann Hogan and grew up in Madison.
Andrea dedicated her entire professional life to bridging cultures. After majoring in Spanish in college, she began her career as an instructor of English as a Second Language. After spending some time living in Mexico City, she became an administrator in colleges and universities focused on assisting international students, where she helped countless students from all over the world feel welcomed in the United States during their overseas studies. She later also helped design and lead study abroad programs for US students. She served on the boards of several organizations dedicated to advancing international education.
In her personal life, Andrea was a loving wife and mother, and the heart of her family. She was a builder of community, hosting parties that brought together diverse people from different aspects of her life.
For the past several years, Andrea faced and fought her cancer with bravery and with mindfulness. But as she put it in her own words, “I don’t survive, I don’t fight, I don’t battle. I live. And in the living, I learn many things...The way that I live is to accept, adapt, and allow myself a full range of emotions.” That was our Andrea, fully present, full of life, and full of love, up until her last breath.
She is survived by her husband, Joel; her daughters, Elena and Rocio; her mother Jo-Ann; her sister Marianne Rucci; and her extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews, who she held close to her heart.
